India's Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand is expected to strengthen the Indian dairy sector through agricultural technology collaboration rather than increased dairy imports, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The announcement follows the signing of the landmark FTA by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who highlighted the agreement's role in deepening bilateral economic cooperation.
Under the pact, the two countries will implement an Agricultural Productivity Arrangement focused on cooperation in agri-tech, innovation, productivity enhancement and knowledge sharing to improve farm efficiency and raise farmer incomes. MEA officials clarified that India has fully protected its sensitive dairy interests under the agreement while leveraging New Zealand's expertise in dairy technology, genetics and farm management to enhance domestic productivity rather than expand dairy imports.
The partnership is expected to support long-term improvements in milk production, technology adoption and sustainable agricultural practices, creating new opportunities for Indian dairy farmers while preserving the country's dairy sector. (Business Standard)
