The Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) recorded a 5.61% rise in milk sales and a 9.68% increase in curd sales during the Onam season, highlighting strong consumer demand for cooperative dairy products during the festive period. Between August 20 and 25, Milma sold 1,45,76,846.63 litres of milk and 18,09,331.50 kg of curd, compared with the corresponding period last year.
The growth was broad-based across Milma’s three regional cooperative milk producers’ unions. The Thiruvananthapuram Regional Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union (TRCMPU) recorded 5.86% growth in milk sales and 7.94% in curd sales during the five days leading up to Uthradam, while it sold 297.85 tonnes of ghee between August 1 and 25.
The Ernakulam Regional Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union reported a 4.62% increase in milk sales and a 16.44% rise in curd sales, while selling 172.58 tonnes of ghee between August 1 and 25. The Malabar Regional Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union recorded 6.03% growth in milk sales and 8.7% growth in curd sales, alongside 358.35 tonnes of ghee sales during the same period.
Milma attributed the increase to advance preparations and extensive supply-chain management ahead of the festive rush. The performance demonstrates how demand planning, distribution readiness and inventory management can become critical competitive advantages during seasonal demand spikes.
However, Milma continues to face competitive pressure from products entering Kerala from neighbouring states, where production and raw-material costs are lower. Chairman K. S. Mani said milk in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and other states is available at around ₹8–₹10 less than Milma's selling price in Kerala; he also noted that Milma pays farmers among the highest milk prices in India and passes 84% of its revenue to farmers.
For the dairy sector, Milma’s Onam performance offers an important takeaway: strong festive demand can reward cooperatives that combine farmer economics with disciplined supply-chain execution. At the same time, competing on price against lower-cost suppliers and private players remains a continuing challenge. (Onmanorama)
