Vidarbha’s Dairy Renaissance Powers Rural, Women-Led Growth

By DairyNews7x7•Published on November 23, 2025

In Vidarbha, dairy is no longer just a sideline crop; it’s becoming the backbone of the rural economy, driven by an unlikely trio: women, science, and fodder innovation.  Historically dominated by cotton and citrus, the region is now undergoing a structural shift. Women are at the heart of this transformation — they’re not just helping with milking anymore, but are leading procurement societies, managing milk collection centers, and running day-to-day operations. This transition is giving them steady daily income rather than the seasonal highs and lows of typical crop farming.

Scientific cattle management is also gaining ground. In the past, most farmers in Vidarbha used low-input systems, but now breeding programs, mastitis prevention protocols, and AI-powered health monitoring platforms are being adopted at scale.  A new Mother Dairy plant is coming up in Butibori with a capacity of six lakh litres per day, pushing the need for healthier, higher-yielding cattle.

Fodder, long a bottleneck for cattle productivity in Vidarbha, is finally getting scientific attention. The region has introduced two fodder varietals tailored to its climate, along with silage solutions and community fodder banks to make feed supplies more reliable and cost-effective. This is being complemented by plans for a feed plant to supply quality feed and ensure better productivity cycles.

Cooperatives and private investors are pouring money into the region, building chilling, processing, and collection infrastructure — a move likely to correct Vidarbha’s traditional economic instability.  New milk-routes are being formalised, and value-added categories like ghee, UHT milk and paneer are gaining attention, adding more business opportunities for women-led producer groups.

What’s unfolding is more than a dairy program. Vidarbha’s shift toward women-led governance, science-driven dairy, and institutional fodder security is creating a resilient rural economy built to withstand climate risk, seasonal volatility and crop failures.
