Telangana’s Indira Dairy Scheme Offers Women Earnings up to Rs 40,000/Month
The Telangana government has launched the Indira Dairy Scheme to empower rural women with sustainable dairy-based livelihoods, enabling them to earn between ₹20,000 and ₹40,000 per month by establishing and operating small dairy enterprises with government support.
Under the programme, eligible women are provided with two dairy animals worth approximately ₹2 lakh, of which 70 % (₹1.4 lakh) is subsidised by the state, and the balance is financed through bank loans — making entry into commercial dairying accessible even without initial capital. The package also includes fodder supply, veterinary care and solar-powered sheds to strengthen farm infrastructure and increase productivity.
The income potential of the model is grounded in basic herd economics: two buffaloes producing around 20 litres of milk per day can yield ₹30,000–₹36,000 per month in milk sales alone, with additional earnings from allied incomes pushing total monthly returns to the ₹40,000 range after accounting for operating costs. This represents a meaningful livelihood opportunity for women entrepreneurs in rural districts.
The scheme is being piloted in Madhira and Kodangal constituencies, with a total budget allocation of ₹781 crore and ₹286 crore already released for statewide rollout. By mobilising dairy assets, infrastructure support and credit access, the initiative aims to transform local women into dairy producers and profitable micro-entrepreneurs, strengthening the regional dairy value chain and rural economy.
