Purabi Dairy Marks Pre-Magh Bihu, Reports Expansion in Assam

By DairyNews7x7•Published on January 13, 2026

Purabi Dairy, operated by the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd (WAMUL) — the largest dairy cooperative in Northeast India — celebrated pre-Magh Bihu at its Panjabari processing plant in Guwahati, reporting a year of notable growth across Assam’s dairy sector. The event highlighted rising milk procurement, a growing cooperative network of dairy societies, and widened market reach, reflecting strengthened grassroots dairy engagement and stable income opportunities for rural farmers.

Officials said Purabi’s focus on farmer-centric growth through enhanced procurement systems and expanded dairy co-op membership has brought many new producers into the organised fold, particularly in Upper Assam, helping dairy farming emerge as a sustainable livelihood option for thousands of rural families.

Over the past year, Purabi Dairy also expanded its product range, launching traditional Indian sweets, while continuing strong consumer demand for value-added products such as flavoured milk and ice cream. Longer shelf-life items like UHT milk have enabled access to distant markets, underpinning brand growth and diversification.

Distribution has widened with the opening of new Purabi milk booths in partnership with local agencies like the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), supporting last-mile delivery and local entrepreneurship.

Looking ahead, WAMUL officials said new processing plants are planned at Silchar, Jorhat and Dibrugarh, which would boost local procurement, cut transportation costs and support region-specific dairy development in the Barak Valley and Upper Assam.
