Pune Activists Link Dairy Sector With Beef Trade Chain

As part of a Republic Day week awareness campaign, youth activists in Pune organised a public exhibition on JM Road highlighting what they describe as a structural connection between India’s dairy industry and the beef export trade — a link that is often misunderstood or overlooked by consumers. The initiative was led by the Pune Animal Liberation group at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden, drawing attention to livestock lifecycle issues that touch both dairy and meat sectors.

According to the activists, India — the world’s largest milk producer with annual output exceeding 230 million tonnes — also exports more than 1.3 million tonnes of beef each year, despite widespread perception that dairy and meat operate separately. They argue that in practice, the two industries are part of the same economic chain: dairy animals that are no longer productive for milk are often channelled into the meat industry, including beef exports, once they cease to be profitable for milk production.

Exhibition messages emphasised that this “milk-to-meat” flow reflects broader livestock economics — where cows and buffaloes past peak lactation have reduced value in milk markets and become part of meat supply chains. Organisers noted visible evidence such as stray, abandoned or injured cattle on Pune’s streets, which they allege are former dairy animals facing neglect once they stop producing milk.

Speakers at the event urged greater public awareness of the lifecycle of dairy livestock and ethical consumption choices, and recommended debates on animal welfare, end-of-life management systems for dairy cattle, and improved policy measures that ensure humane treatment of animals across both dairy and beef value chains.
