Perfect Day’s Gujarat Whey Plant Set for 2026 Start, 2027 Scale-Up

By DairyNews7x7•Published on December 16, 2025

Precision-fermentation pioneer Perfect Day says its forthcoming production facility in Gujarat’s Bharuch district is on schedule to begin operations in the second half of 2026, with a planned capacity ramp-up in 2027 to meet growing demand for recombinant dairy proteins.

The facility — a **joint venture between Perfect Day and Zydus Lifesciences — uses precision fermentation to produce beta-lactoglobulin (BLG), a high-functionality whey protein without relying on cows.

Perfect Day’s leadership says the plant is expected to be instantly profitable at launch and will lay the foundation for long-term commercial scale-up and reliability.

Officials report that although letters of intent (LOIs) are still being collected for future expansions, many signed commercial contracts already exist for the current plant, and existing capacity is effectively sold out. Demand, according to the company, significantly outpaces supply, especially from beverage, sports and active nutrition, and medical nutrition segments that value BLG’s solubility and amino acid profile.

Industry sources see the Gujarat facility as a milestone in India’s emerging precision-fermented dairy ecosystem. India’s first large-scale precision fermentation dairy plant broke ground in Bharuch in late 2024 through Sterling Biotech, a Perfect Day–Zydus JV, with operations also expected in early 2026.

Perfect Day’s strategy emphasises security of supply and performance characteristics of recombinant whey over environmental or ESG messaging alone, positioning BLG as a strategic input for an expanding range of products that go beyond traditional dairy ingredients.

The announcement comes as global markets see increasing interest in precision-fermented proteins driven by demand for sustainable, high-functionality dairy ingredients — a trend supported by the presence of other players advancing microbial whey and dairy proteins worldwide.

If the Gujarat facility hits its 2026 timeline and scales as planned in 2027, it may become a critical supply point for recombinant dairy proteins, enabling food and beverage formulators to integrate next-generation whey solutions at commercial scale.

Key Takeaways

  • Perfect Day’s precision fermentation plant in Gujarat is on track for H2 2026 start, with ramp-up in 2027.

  • Initial capacity is sold out, with strong commercial demand especially in high-protein beverage and nutrition sectors.

  • The facility builds on earlier precision-fermentation dairy protein infrastructure development in Bharuch.

  • Focus is on commercial viability and protein functionality, not just sustainability branding.
