Milma seeks govt nod for Rs 4 milk price hike
Prefer on

Kerala Co‑operative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) has formally requested the **Kerala government’s approval to raise retail milk prices by ₹4 per litre, a move backed by an expert committee recommendation amid rising producer and input costs. Milma traditionally consults the state before such revisions even though it has autonomy to set prices, aiming to share most of the additional revenue with dairy farmers and primary societies.

Currently, milk in Kerala is priced at around ₹52 per litre; if approved, the new rate would increase that to approximately ₹56 per litre — with most of the extra ₹4 (about ₹2.40) expected to go directly to farmers and the remainder split among societies and retailers. η The request follows a panel recommendation to consider a ₹4-6 hike but has to clear government review before implementation.

The timing of the proposal — just before state elections — has led officials, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, to voice caution due to potential public backlash over price increases close to voters heading to the polls. The government is currently weighing economic justifications against possible political sensitivities before granting approval.
