Inside the World’s Giant 230,000 Cow Mega Farm in China

By DairyNews7x7•Published on January 22, 2026

One of the world’s largest concentrated dairy operations — **China Modern Dairy’s mega farm in Anhui Province, China — houses more than 230,000 dairy cows under a single industrial system, making it one of the top two biggest livestock facilities globally by herd size. This facility, often compared with other large production hubs such as the Mudanjiang City Mega Farm with roughly 100,000 dairy cows, represents a massive scale of industrial milk production that is reshaping global perceptions of dairy supply chains.

China Modern Dairy’s mega farm operates as part of a broader trend in industrialised agriculture where large herds are maintained in intensive, barn-based systems, supported by advanced logistics, automated feeding and milking infrastructure to sustain high output and efficiency. With its enormous herd, the farm plays a key role in meeting domestic and export-linked demand for milk and dairy ingredients, reflecting China’s strategy to scale up dairy production capacity rapidly.

Such mega dairy units contrast sharply with traditional dairy models in countries like India and many parts of Africa and South Asia, where milk production predominantly comes from smallholdings with 2–5 animals per farm. In comparison, the factory-style approach in Anhui raises discussions around efficiency, environmental impact, animal welfare, and supply chain integration. The sheer scale — tens of thousands of cows concentrated in one facility — demands complex management of feed logistics, waste handling, health services and milking throughput.

Experts note that while mega farms like this contribute large volumes of milk to national and regional supply chains, they also highlight the diversity of dairy production models internationally, from smallholder cooperatives that define India’s White Revolution to industrial facilities that aim for scale and export competitiveness. As global dairy trade expands and markets evolve, both models will continue influencing food security, pricing dynamics and dairy policy frameworks worldwide.
