Amul Launches ‘Sarlaben’ AI to Empower 36 Lakh Dairy Producers

Amul has taken a bold digital leap by launching an artificial intelligence-powered assistant named ‘Sarlaben’, designed to serve dairy farmers across over 18,500 villages in Gujarat with round-the-clock guidance on animal husbandry and dairy practices. The platform was flagged off by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel as part of a broader push to link grassroots dairy production with cutting-edge technology.

Amul AI utilises one of the most extensive cooperative data ecosystems in Indian dairying, built over decades. It taps into a rich repository that includes over 200 crore annual milk procurement transactions, veterinary treatment records covering nearly 3 crore cattle, 70 lakh artificial inseminations a year and even fodder production mapping via ISRO satellite data. Together, this data backbone enables Sarlaben to deliver individualised, accurate guidance on cattle feeding, vaccination schedules, medical treatment, breeding practices, and applicable government schemes — all in the farmer’s preferred language.

The AI assistant will be accessible through the Amul Farmer mobile application, already used by more than 10 lakh members, and via voice calls for feature phone and landline users, ensuring inclusivity across digital literacy levels. Integrated with Amul’s Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS) and the Pashudhan app, this platform aims to strengthen decision-making at the village level, improve animal productivity, incomes and disease management, and bridge knowledge gaps in real time.

Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), noted that Amul AI reflects the cooperative’s decades of structured data and its commitment to “taking dependable, verified information directly to the farmer” to support timely and effective action. With a network that procures 350 lakh + litres of milk daily and connects 36 lakh producers (many of them women) to formal dairy value chains, the AI platform is poised to deepen farmer engagement and operational resilience.

Amul’s foray into AI comes at a time of intensifying digital transformation in agriculture and dairy, where technology is increasingly seen as a tool to enhance productivity, traceability and sustainability across supply chains. If widely adopted, innovations like Sarlaben could become templates for other cooperative and private sector players seeking to integrate precision advisory services with everyday field operations.
