The Praja Darbar Party (PDP) has urged the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) to take over the closed Ongole Dairy in Andhra Pradesh to safeguard the livelihoods of milk farmers in Prakasam district. During a meeting with NDDB Chairman Meenesh Shah in New Delhi, PDP president and former MLA Tupakula Gurunatha Reddy requested immediate intervention to revive the dairy, which has remained shut and reportedly affected thousands of dairy farmers dependent on milk procurement in the region.
According to the party, the closure of Ongole Dairy has forced many farmers to sell milk at lower prices to private buyers, weakening cooperative dairy support systems in Prakasam district. PDP representatives stated that reopening the dairy under NDDB management could help restore stable milk procurement, improve farmer payments and strengthen the local dairy economy.
NDDB officials reportedly assured that the proposal and feasibility aspects would be examined. The issue comes amid increasing concerns over the operational challenges faced by several cooperative dairies across India, including financial stress, infrastructure limitations and rising competition from private dairy companies. Industry observers believe revival of regional cooperative dairies could play a critical role in protecting farmer interests, improving organized milk procurement and strengthening rural dairy infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh.
