Ladakh Strengthens Dairy Mission Through Farmer Training

The Department of Animal Husbandry, Ladakh, in collaboration with Ladakh Oma (Ladakh Milk Federation), organised an orientation programme on July 18, 2026, to accelerate dairy development and strengthen rural livelihoods through closer coordination between the government and dairy cooperatives.

Chaired by Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Rudra Gaud P.T., IAS, the programme brought together departmental officers, technical field staff and senior representatives of Ladakh Oma to discuss strategies for expanding the region's dairy sector. Officials highlighted that the existing Leh milk plant is operating at full capacity, processing more than 8,000 litres of milk per day, with 90% of its output supplied directly to the Indian Army, while fresh curd and paneer are marketed locally.

Currently, over 1,800 dairy farmers are associated with Ladakh Oma, generating a monthly turnover of approximately ₹1.30 crore, with payments transferred directly to farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Progressive dairy farmers are reportedly earning more than ₹1 lakh per month, while average monthly incomes range between ₹30,000 and ₹50,000. The Secretary directed the Department and Ladakh Oma to jointly organise awareness camps, ensure uninterrupted availability of feed, fodder and medicines, and launch monthly scientific training programmes for field staff and farmers.

He also stated that a formal framework for Mission Dairy Development is being prepared in line with the Lieutenant Governor's vision of doubling livestock numbers and milk production, while encouraging educated unemployed youth to explore dairy farming as a sustainable livelihood opportunity.
