Kerala Sets Goal for 2031 Self-Sufficiency in Milk, Eggs & Meat

Kerala has announced an ambitious plan to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of milk, eggs and meat by 2031, as part of its broader Vision 2031 development framework, state officials said. The dairy, poultry and livestock sectors are being strengthened through targeted interventions to reduce reliance on imports and meet local demand from within the state.

Milk Production Growth & Targets
Kerala’s annual milk output has increased by around 14 %, reaching about 25.27 lakh metric tonnes — a sign of progress toward self-sufficiency, according to the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development. To reach full sufficiency by 2031, the government plans to boost average milk yield per cow by roughly 12.5 % through improved genetics, modern breeding practices and enhanced veterinary services. Subsidised access to sex-sorted semen, heifer parks, and comprehensive livestock insurance are part of the strategy to raise productivity and protect dairy farmers from shocks.

Expansion in Eggs & Meat
Alongside dairy, the government intends to significantly scale up egg and meat production to reduce dependency on external sources. State plans include promoting scientific poultry farming, creating broiler village models, setting up modern meat and rendering facilities, and improving marketing infrastructure to strengthen the value chain. The aim is to increase daily egg output from current levels to higher thresholds and uplift meat production by around 40 %, balancing Kerala’s high domestic consumption with local supply.

Vision 2031 Integration
These agricultural targets form part of Kerala’s Vision 2031 development agenda, which encompasses broader socioeconomic goals across health, infrastructure and agriculture. By boosting internal production of essential food commodities, the state seeks to enhance nutritional security, rural livelihoods, farmer incomes and supply chain resilience over the next decade.
