Nandini Adopts AI-Based Product Counting to Boost Dairy Operations
The **Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) — under its flagship Nandini dairy brand — is rolling out an AI-based product counting solution at key processing facilities in Bengaluru, Kanakapura and Hoskote to strengthen inventory tracking and operational efficiency. This camera-enabled machine-vision system will automate the counting of milk and dairy product units during packing and dispatch, replacing manual tallying and reducing errors.
The AI system uses computer vision and real-time algorithms to detect and record crates and packaged products such as milk packets and curd cups as they move through packing lines. The technology is expected to cut down on labour-intensive inventory checks, improve data accuracy, and reduce shrinkage or miscounts that can occur in high-volume dairy operations.
KMF officials say this initiative marks a strategic push toward digital transformation in the cooperative sector, aligning with broader trends of smart automation in dairy supply chains. By integrating AI into core processing workflows, Nandini aims to enhance traceability, reconciliation and audit processes, laying the groundwork for further data analytics and quality control tools down the line.
Industry analysts note that technology adoption in dairy operations can help cooperatives compete more effectively with private sector players, where automation has been gaining ground across processing, logistics and distribution. As digital solutions scale across other union facilities, they may also improve operational transparency and supply chain responsiveness, especially important for large brands like Nandini with extensive retail and wholesale footprints.
